About The Therapist

Alex Kokesh is a licensed Occupational Therapist with specialized training in psychosocial rehabilitation. He holds a B.S. in Behavioral Neuroscience from Michigan State University and a Master's of Occupational Therapy from Eastern Michigan University. Alex trained at Sheppard Pratt Psychiatric Hospital in Towson, MD and has experience working in community mental health and with formerly incarcerated populations. 

Alex's Story

Alex has a passion for helping others transform their lives so that they can become their ideal selves. Working with those with severe mental illness and reentering society following incarceration, he has aided clients in extreme situations implement the cognitive, emotional, and social skills needed to create balance and guide them to realizing their ultimate potential. Funktional Mental Health is his effort to facilitate his unique approach to a wider audience. Psychosocial rehabilitation, while not traditional psychotherapy, can be a powerful tool that bridges the gap between discovering yourself and putting your aspirations into action. Alex uses a variety of tools including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, cognitive-behavioral principles, executive functioning training, cognitive adaptation, assertiveness training, sensory modulation, motivational interviewing, and attachment theory to inform interventions that can be input into the everyday fabric of your life. The aim of mental health OT is to optimize your engagement and performance in the things that matter: activities of daily living, work, social participation, leisure, rest and sleep, play, education, and health management. It is Alex's firm belief that you do better when you do better.
